Szigetvár is a place in southern Hungary in the Baranya county. (5167) Szigetvár derives its fame from a battle waged against the Turks in 1566. The castle of Szigetvár was on islands in the swamp area (the name means island castle) and was therefore not easy to conquer. For exactly 33 days, the commander Miklós Zrínyi, with 2,500 defenders, stood against a Turkish force majeure of 80,000 under the leadership of Sultan Süleyman. In spite of tempting offers – the surrender of Croatian-Hungarian Zrinyi would forever dominate the Turkish satellite states of Croatia and Slovenia – Zrinyi did not give up. When the fight was finally a fight from man to man, the Turks won and only a few defenders of the castle won the battle. The grandson of the fallen Miklós Zrinyi wrote the drama ‘The fall of Sziget’. The castle, built by the Turks, was restored after 1960. On the Zrinyi tér there is a monument for the commander and the former mosque, originally with two minarets, which was turned into a baroque Roman Catholic church towards the end of the 18th century.Szigetvár is located on main road 6, which Barcs via Pécs with Budapest connects. Szigetvár also has a station on the railway line between Barcs and Pécs.
